Journal plagiarism policies outline the standards and consequences related to plagiarism, including self-plagiarism, within submitted manuscripts. These policies typically define acceptable levels of similarity with other works, and specify procedures for handling plagiarism at various stages of the publication process.
Key Aspects of Journal Plagiarism Policies:
Definition of Plagiarism:
Journals define plagiarism as the act of presenting someone else's work or ideas as one's own, without proper attribution. This includes direct copying, paraphrasing without citation, and self-plagiarism (using one's own previously published work without proper citation).
Acceptable Similarity Levels:
Journals often specify a percentage of similarity that is considered acceptable, typically with a range between 5-15%. This allows for the inclusion of properly cited quotes, paraphrased information, and common academic phrases.
Consequences of Plagiarism:
Journals have specific procedures for handling plagiarism, which may include:
Rejection of the manuscript without review.
Returning the manuscript to the author for revision.
Retraction of published articles if plagiarism is discovered after publication.
Informing the author's institution and/or funding agencies.
Detection Methods:
Journals often use plagiarism detection software (like Turnitin) to identify potential instances of plagiarism.
Ethical Considerations:
Plagiarism policies are in place to uphold academic integrity and ensure that authors are properly credited for their work.
Examples of Specific Policies:
< 5% Plagiarism:Manuscripts might be given an ID and returned to the author for content revision.
5-15% Plagiarism:Manuscripts may be returned for content revision.
> 20% Plagiarism:Manuscripts may be rejected without review.
Major Plagiarism:Extensive copying or sections without attribution can lead to manuscript rejection, notification of the author's institution, and a ban from future submissions.
Post-Publication Plagiarism:Retraction of the article, with a retraction notice, is a common practice.
In essence, journal plagiarism policies aim to:
Prevent academic dishonesty and maintain the integrity of the scholarly record.
Ensure that all published work is original and properly attributed.
Establish clear guidelines for authors and reviewers on plagiarism and related ethical issue
